One of the joys of a bonfire is building the fire.

From splitting firewood into small pieces with a knife, to feathersticking by shaving wood into thin, feather-like strips and stacking them to ignite the flames – these are the essence of fire-starting, and the pleasure lies in being able to perform all these steps with a single knife.

While it's desirable for the whole family to enjoy this activity together,

What if someone cuts their hand on the blade? What if the blade breaks accidentally? It seems difficult for children with less strength to split or shave wood...

Isn't this why the father often ends up taking on this role?

It would certainly be more enjoyable if the whole family could share the fun of starting a fire, not just the father.

Even those with less strength can easily split wood, and even without skill, one can easily shave wood. Since the tip is not sharp, even beginners can use it with confidence.

"Let the whole family enjoy fire-starting together."

We have created a unique axe specifically for fire-starting, a concept that didn't exist before. Here are our five key features!

1. The blade is less prone to wear due to the protruding tip design.

"Batoning" is a technique for splitting wood with a knife. It is especially used for splitting thin, long pieces of wood that are often difficult to split with an axe.

By pressing the knife onto the wood and striking the spine of the knife with another "different piece of wood," you can easily split the wood. This has become an essential skill for camp enthusiasts when starting a fire, gaining widespread attention.

For beginners, splitting wood is full of dangers.

"Unable to control the blade well, leading to injury." "Applying too much force, damaging the tip of the blade."

Have you ever had such experiences?

To ensure everyone can use it with peace of mind, we designed a protrusion called "ishizuki" (stone guard) at the tip of the knife to protect the blade.

If you accidentally hit the blade on a stone while splitting wood, damaging the blade, this is a common situation for many. Such an incident can ruin your entire day. However, with the "ishizuki" design on our nata (Japanese hatchet), you can apply force to split wood without worrying about the ground.

Furthermore, when splitting wood with a nata or knife, the blade often gets stuck in the splitting block, requiring you to retrieve it each time, which can be frustrating. With the "ishizuki" design, the blade won't easily get stuck in the splitting block, making the splitting process smoother.

2. The non-pointed tip reduces the chance of injury.

When splitting wood, have you ever tried to pull out a stuck blade and accidentally pricked yourself with the tip of the knife or nata?

With our forged splitting nata, the tip is not pointed but has a rounded design, which reduces the risk of injury, providing you with greater peace of mind.

3. The extremely thick 6mm forged blade makes splitting wood effortless.
The blade thickness reaches 6mm, which is quite thick for a splitting tool. This thickness allows the blade to more easily push the wood apart from both sides when splitting. Compared to thinner blades, you can split wood with less effort.

Additionally, the cross-section of the blade has a slightly rounded shape, similar to a clam shell, known as a "clam blade." This design increases the blade's robustness and reduces the likelihood of edge wear. This gives it a stronger wood-splitting capability.

4. No worries about breakage, sturdy full tang construction.

In traditional knives, where the handle and blade are separate, the connection point between the blade and handle can be stressed when splitting wood, posing a risk of breakage.

However, with a full tang construction where the steel extends from the blade through the handle, you can strike it forcefully without hesitation! This design significantly reduces the risk of breakage and is incredibly sturdy. You can use it with complete confidence.

We use silicon-manganese steel, which is hard and has high toughness, as the material. This special steel is typically used for cultivator claws, automotive leaf springs, and other applications requiring impact resistance.

We heat-forge the blade using a 600-ton giant press, making it exceptionally tough and durable.

Even with strong impacts when splitting wood, the blade is not easily worn or broken. This is a highly durable and authentic splitting nata.

5. With excellent center of gravity balance, smooth and enjoyable feathersticking is possible.
After splitting wood into small pieces, the next step is to make feathersticks. Creating flammable feathersticks requires shaving off a large amount of thin, feathery strips, and this step is very important.

Controlling the cutting edge is extremely important, and the key lies in the balance of the blade's center of gravity.

If, like a typical nata, the head is too heavy, it tends to swing around during use and requires great effort to control, making it difficult to achieve precise targets.

If, like a full tang knife, the handle side is too heavy, then controlling the blade primarily relies on arm strength, making delicate work difficult and preventing the creation of fine feathersticks.

With the "Forged Splitting Nata," by concentrating the overall center of gravity in the middle, the appropriate weight at the tip of the blade allows for easy shaving of wood with minimal force. At the same time, the handle side also has a suitable weight, making head control easier and enabling the creation of delicate feathersticks.

The overall length of 24.5 cm also makes it compact and easy to use, just like a knife.

We are also particular about the included leather sheath.

We believe that packaging is an important part of the product. That's why we want to use materials that you can confidently recommend.

About an hour's drive from our factory, in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Sanyo Co., Ltd. is a top-tier manufacturer of high-quality leather with over 100 years of history. We used their "full vegetable-tanned leather."

Sanyo's full vegetable-tanned leather is gradually tanned by soaking it in tannin solution pits for about a month.

Therefore, without damaging the leather fiber layer, it maintains its toughness and strength, becoming a true "leather." This characteristic is ideal for protecting sharp blades and delicate tips.

The work of turning this leather into packaging is handled by artisans from Toyooka Kaban, also located in Hyogo Prefecture. This triple collaboration of "Himeji leather" x "Toyooka leather bags" x "Miki cutlery" has created high-quality leather packaging, which is our standard configuration.

The brass buckle serves as a decorative accent, and you can also enjoy the aging process over time.

From "Banshu Miki," the hometown of cutlery.
This product was born in Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture. This area, once known as "Banshu Miki," is one of Japan's leading cutlery production regions. To this day, we continue to produce high-quality cutlery. Kanzawa Iron Works, who developed FEDECA, is one such company. Since gathering blacksmiths and founding in 1895, we have honed our craftsmanship for over a century. Today, we offer many products suitable for professionals, such as drill bits and other woodworking tools.

Precautions for Use
Batoning is the art of splitting wood with an axe or knife.
By pressing the axe onto the wood and striking the back of the axe with another piece of wood, the wood is split.

Please note the following when batoning with a knife.
・Do not strike the handle. Doing so may cause the handle to crack.
・Do not strike the back of the axe with metal objects such as hammers.
・Please perform this on a chopping block or log, not directly on the ground.
・Do not break hard wood with knots.
・When using a cleaver, please wear protective gloves.

Blade Care

Forged splitting knives use sharp high-carbon steel, so rust prevention measures are crucial for the long-term use of the blade.
The entire surface of the "Forged Splitting Nata" is coated with black fluororesin to protect it, but uncoated blades require anti-corrosion measures.
After use, wipe off moisture and apply anti-rust oil such as camellia oil for long-term use.

Handle Care
At the time of shipment, FEDECA's special carnauba wax is applied to the wood of the handle. The "carnauba wax" used in this carnauba wax has the highest hardness and melting point (melting temperature) among plant waxes and is a 100% natural wax strong enough to be used for car wax. When the surface becomes dry or the waterproofing effect wears off, applying this wax or commercially available wood wax will restore its original luster. The more times it is applied, the higher the protective effect, so it can be applied every time it is used.

* A threadlocker is used for the screws that secure the handle. Do not attempt to disassemble the product, as forcibly turning the screws may damage the screw slots.
